Why CLB matters for Canadian immigration

Canada doesn’t use raw IELTS or CELPIP numbers for immigration — it uses CLB (or NCLC in French). Every points-based program is scored in CLB.

Express Entry CRS: CLB 9 in all four skills is worth up to 136 points (single) or 128 (with spouse). CLB 7 unlocks eligibility; CLB 9+ unlocks high scores.
Canadian Experience Class: Minimum CLB 7 for TEER 0 & 1 roles, CLB 5 for TEER 2 & 3.
Federal Skilled Worker: Minimum CLB 7 in all four abilities in your first official language.
Provincial Nominee Programs: Vary by stream — most require CLB 4 to 7 minimum.
French bonus: NCLC 7+ in French unlocks an additional 25–50 CRS points on top of English scores.
Citizenship: CLB 4 in speaking and listening for Canadian citizenship applicants aged 18–54.
